Vanessa is currently the Manager Archaeology at Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, this role involves managing the implementation of legislation regulating the protection and modification of archaeological sites. Prior to working for HNZPT Vanessa spent 17 years working in Local Government in roles that included providing advice on the conservation management and protection of archaeological and historic heritage places including Auckland Regional Council, Auckland Council and Wellington City Council.
ABSTRACT
In this talk I will introduce the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act’s protection of archaeological sites and the role of Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga. I will cover types of archaeological sites found in NZ and how you can identify them, the junction where arboriculture meets archaeology and an example of an project using archaeological methods to find and replace a historic orchard.
