James brings nearly 15 years of leadership experience in the arboriculture sector, underpinned by a robust academic focus on skill shortages, labour economics, and industrial organisation. His dedication to addressing the industry’s most pressing challenges culminated in his internationally recognised master’s thesis, Skills Mismatches and Worker Shortages in the New Zealand Arboriculture Industry, which earned him a distinction in 2021.
As an influential member of the Skills Shortage and Career Pathways Working Group at the New Zealand Arboricultural Association (NZArb), James plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of the industry’s workforce. His recent initiatives at Tree King have centred on redefining the field arborist role and cultivating a workplace culture that values and empowers its team members.
